Indonesia, Indonesia

Background/Objective: Indonesia consists of 17,000 thousands of islands, 33 provinces and about
225 million inhabitants. Number of psychiatrists in Indonesia is approximately 700, and around
quarter of them are early career psychiatrists (ECP). Distribution of psychiatrists is mainly based in
cities and capital city of the provinces.

Method: Review of ECP training in Indonesia.

Result: After completing medical faculty for 5.5 years, and internship for 1 year, one can choose to
continue studying as a medical specialist. As happened in other countries, interest in psychiatry
training is still low compare to other medical speciality. Eventhough not too high but there is a slight
increase of number of applicants to enter psychiatry nowadays. Psychiatric residency is a 4 years
training. There are eight centers for psychiatric residency training in psychiatry, which may graduate
20-30 psychiatrists a year. Having completed residency and two years of experiences, one may
continue subspeciality training in child and adolescent psychiatry or psychotherapy. In the future
subspeciality training in addiction, psychogeriatric and forensic psychiatry will be developed to train
more psychiatrists who works mostly at academic institutions in Indonesia. ECPs continue to
contribute in governmental and private psychiatric services and academic institutions; and from here
ECPs might also have the opportunity to take training abroad according to what he/she interests and
needs from the workplace.

Conclusion: Indonesian ECP formal taining takes 4 years and it may continue to lifelong learning as
the psychiatric knowledge keeps growing.
