Magda Fahmy
Suez Canal University, Egypt
Background/Objective: There is high risk of co morbidity of other psychiatric disorders with
substance abuse with multiple predictive factors .
Method: Cross sectional observational study was carried out for 191 patients diagnosed as
substance abuse disorder according to DSM IV using SCID I and SCID II and were recruited from
out and inpatients addiction unit ,Institute of Psychiatry,Ain Shams University Hospitals during the
period September 2014-February 2015.
Result: The rate of comorbidity was 60% more for borderline personality followed by bipolar
disorder then psychosis .They correlated positively with positive family history , younger age of
onset of substance abuse and repeated relapses. The group with past history of ADHD and
CD was more severely disturbed, with more severe aggressive behaviors. Comorbid disorders
showed higher levels of suspicion/paranoia, suicidal attempts and residual symptoms
Conclusion: These findings provide a benchmark for the rate and shape of the psychiatric co
morbidity against which standardized therapeutic intervention programs should be planned.
