Psychosocial Interventions in the Treatment of Adolescent Substance Abuse
Disorder
Peter Verhagen
GGZ Centraal, Netherlands
Background/Objective: Several treatments have been shown to reduce adolescent substance use,
many of these interventions focus on alleviating substance use alone rather than targeting multiple
adolescent problem behaviors.
Method: A computerized search of the literature addressing the psychotherapy of substance use
disorder (SUD) in adolescents was performed. Data from relevant peer-reviewed scientific
presentations were included.
Result: The associations among family factors and adolescent problem behaviors, as well as strong
empirical support for family-based interventions were tested in a number of rigorously controlled
trials . Protective factors within the individual and his family can buffer against the negative
impact of risk factors such as deviant peer involvement. Broad-based interventions that tackle
substance abuse, related risky behaviors , unsafe sexual practices, delinquency, psychiatric symptoms,
and school problems among adolescents showed improvement . Supportive parenting was found to
ameliorate genetic risk for adolescent drug abuse . Combined harm reduction interventions can
prevent HCV infection .Community programs implementing effective interventions has been
slow.
Conclusion: Further controlled studies directed at reducing drug use and craving, and guiding the
integration of pharmacotherapy and psychosocial interventions for substance use disorders .
