Neuroinflamation and Neurodegeneration in Animal Model of Schizophrenia
Xin-Min Li
University of Alberta, Canada
Content: Dr. Li’s group has recently demonstrated antidepressants and atypical antipsychotics
protect neural cells against harmful conditions or toxic insults, and may contribute to therapeutic
effects in the treatment of psychiatric illness.
Quetiapine and antidepressants treatment increases the proliferation of neural progenitors, directs the
differentiation and facilitates myelination (Molecular Psychiatry, 2008). Furthermore, chronic
administration of quetiapine prevents cortical demyelination and concomitant spatial working
memory impairment induced by cuprizone (Schizophrenia Research, 2009). The results imply
pro-myelinating interventions are potential approaches to treat patients with depression and
schizophrenia.
