Projective Identification and Mentalization in Psychodynamic Group
Psychotherapy

Background/Objective: Few psychoanalysts would deny projective identification is one of the most
important concepts in psychoanalysis. Understanding the interpersonal communication through
projective identification is a vital part of psychoanalytic group psychotherapy and an effective
pathway for development of patient’s mentalization.

Method: In this presentation, I will briefly review the concepts of projective identification and
mentalization and their manifestation in groups.

Result: I will use case examples to illustrate using projective identification as a tool to help group
members with borderline personality organization to develop their ability to mentalize.

Conclusion: The experience in China will be shared.
