Background/Objective: Insomnia is a common problem among persons with alcohol dependence
(AD). Among patients with AD, insomnia symptoms occur in 36 to 91% of individuals, depending
on sample characteristics, severity of alcohol dependence, time since last drink, the definition and
assessment of insomnia, and geographical variation. None of non-pharmacological studies of
insomnia complains among individuals with AD were computer-based, and none were performed in
Ukraine.

Method: A total of 8 individuals with AD participated in the pilot Internet cognitive-behavior
therapy for insomnia study. At baseline, at the end of the study, and at 6 and 12-week follow-up,
subjects reported substance use and related clinical variables; daytime functioning measures and
sleep variables.

Result: The average age of participants was 44 years (±11.97); predominantly females (62.5%); all
were Ukrainians; 71.4% had higher education; 57.1% were married. Mean total scores on Alcohol
Use Disorders Identification Test (AUDIT) at baseline and at 6-week follow-up of the study were
29.2 and 7.5 respectively. Depression, anxiety and stress subscales of the Depression Anxiety Stress
Scale (DASS), Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS) and STOP were decreased from baseline to the
12-week follow-up. Mean total Sleep Problems Questionnaire (SPQ) scores at baseline and at
12-week follow-up of the study were 17.17 and 9.5 respectively.

Conclusion: This Internet intervention for a sample of alcohol-dependent ukrainian patients with
insomnia is the first computer-based treatment program. The findings underscore the importance of
assessing and treating insomnia in addition to alcohol dependence.
